November 2018 Minutes
Knights of Columbus Meeting November 15, 2018.
Meeting preceded by Rosary, Communion service, and meal.
7:30 PM – Meeting called to order.
Opening prayer – Deputy Grand Knight.
Officer role call – Not present were grand knight (Kendall Geneser – Kendall arrived later), inside guard (Ken Welch), trustee (Travis Risvold), and warden (Chris Kitt).
Chaplain’s message: Dec. Dennis – Think about what we can do to support and encourage altar servers. Treats? Picnic type event? “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” Consider making an extra effort to welcome visiting priests. Take them out to dinner? Provide a meal?
Dec. Dennis contacted Kellie Markey. Dorothy’s House has improved intake process. They are not changing policies.
Mary Herrmann made a motion to waive the reading of the minutes. Dec. Dennis seconded the motion; motion passed.
There was a video 1st degree ceremony prior to the meeting. Welcome to our newest member Ed Nixon!
Message from Kendall: Kendall suggests spending some money, perhaps $500 on replacement tables and kitchen equipment. We decided to table this discussion as Ken Welch was not present.
District Deputy Report: Recruit, recruit! District meeting is this Saturday. Kendall would like someone to join him.
Treasures Report: $10,076 in checking, $16,700 in CD, $8,000 in Bill Geneser Scholarship fund. $5,200 was raised in tootsie roll drive. $2,164.50 to Special Olympics, $1,082.25 to both On With Life and Camp Sunnyside. Policy has been to put 10% of fund raising proceeds into CD. This would be $1,400 into CD. ~$3,400 would remain in checking. The CD contribution was discussed, and this will be addressed further in the future.
Financial Secretary: Tom has sent dues bills out. There are ~140 paying members.
Thank you letter was received from Woodward Granger Volunteer Social Services.
Previous Sunday omelet breakfast went over very well. Gross proceeds $871. Thank you to Larry Spellerberg! It was suggested to donate the gross proceeds to the social justice committee. Joe Fernandez made a motion to donate $900 to the social justice committee, and Larry seconded the motion; motion passed.
Next breakfast is Sunday, December 2nd. This will be a pancake and sausage breakfast. We discussed possibly making a donation to benefit John and Casey Wheeler from Adel who are expecting Monoamniotic-Monochorionic (MoMo) twins. This means that the twins are sharing one placenta and one amniotic sac. This is a very rare high risk condition. They are trying to avoid an abortion and carry the twins to full term. Casey will require inpatient hospital care starting at 26 weeks gestation. There is a fundraiser breakfast in Adel this Sunday to benefit the family. Marty told us that the 4th degree assembly has pledged to match up to $1,500 in Knights donations. Tom Letsch made a motion to donate the proceeds from our December 2nd breakfast to the Wheelers, Tony seconded the motion; motion passed.
Shannon and Kendall distributed 4 boxes of coats (6 coats per box) to Polk City, Woodward/Granger, and 2 schools in Grimes. There was additional need for specific sizes, and $340 additional was spent.

There will be an officers meeting December 1st at Food Depot. There will be Bingo this Sunday at 2PM at the nursing home. The residents especially enjoy it when kids participate.
We discussed a donation to GiGi’s Playhouse. Shannon made a motion to donate the proceeds from our January breakfast to GiGi’s Playhouse, Dec. Dennis seconded the motion; motion passed.
We discussed our planned donation to Dorothy’s House. Marty made a motion to donate $500 to Dorothy’s House, Hoe Henkels seconded the motion; motion passed.
The next Knight’s Mass will Sunday, December 9th at 10AM.
Tony talked about upcoming 2nd/3rd degree ceremonies:
-Sunday, November 18th in Winterset.
-Tuesday, December 4th, 6PM at St. Anthonys, Des Moines.
-Sunday, January 13th at St. Luke the Evangelist, Ankeny.
-Sunday, January 20th at Saints John & Paul, Altoona.
-Sunday, February 17th at St. Pius, Urbandale.
There are also several upcoming 4th degree exemplifications (no tux needed):
-Sunday, November 18th in Council Bluffs.
-Sunday, February 23rd in Sioux City.
-Sunday, April 7th in Mason City.
-Friday, May 3rd in Des Moines.
Joe Henkels talked about the upcoming Joppa Christmas party which will be December 21st. We served over 300 people last year. Please consider a donation for presents to be distributed at the party. Also, the Tiny Village is going to happen!
Marty talked about Wreaths Across America which is December 15th at Van Meter Veterans Cemetery“Each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, our mission to Remember, Honor and Teach is carried out by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 1,400 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad.“
