Knights of Columbus Meeting November 17, 2016.
Meeting preceded by Rosary, Mass, and meal.
7:25 PM meeting called to order.
Opening prayer – Deputy Grand Knight
Officer role call – Not present were grand knight (Kendall Geneser), warden (Chris Kitt), lecturer (Dec. Tom Schenk), treasurer (Paul Martin).
Message by our chaplain: Fr. Dominic talked about Jesus as King. We talk about Jesus as king, but Jesus never referred to himself as king. Jesus was a different kind of king. He was a king and a servant. Leaders should be servants. We should all try to lead while serving others.
Joe Fernandez moved to waive the reading of the minutes, and Tony Slack seconded the motion. Motion passed despite opposition by Travis Risvold.
Treasures Report: None – treasurer absent.
Financial Secretary: Dues time is coming up. The dues will stay $30.
Shannon Godwin mentioned that there is a new candidate for the Knights that would like to join next month.
A new grill was purchased. I was used for the parish auction/barn dance. We will make frequent use of this.
2 boxes of coats along with hats and mittens were purchased and delivered by Kendall and Shannon to Grimes, Polk City, and Granger elementary schools.
Biscuits and gravy breakfast went well. We make more than $600 with $200 in expenses.
Rock Tower Pizza and choir benches discussions postponed as Joe Henkels was absent.
Kendall named Joe Henkels Knight of the Month last month. Shannon Godwin is named Knight of the month this month. Shannon took it upon himself to get the food for the “Trunk or Treat” event, he organized the biscuits and gravy breakfast, and was instrumental in the coats for kids program.
Tony Slack mentioned that other councils have a Knight of the Month (this is new for us) as well as a family of the month. Tony made a motion to formalize knight of the month and possibly family of the month Ken Wiley seconded the motion; motion passed.
Larry Spellerberg talked about the “Big Idea” concept proposed by Kendall. The idea is to try to get/keep new knights involved. Perhaps a habitat for humanity project?
Dan Merry reported that the Torch Bearer movie had been postponed. The movie did not get sent as expected. The money will be refunded.
Deputy grand knight reported on the “angel fund”. This is a for urgent needs in our community. The fund administered by the social justice committee. Funds are dwindling and there are not any incoming funds. It was suggested to have a breakfast and donate the proceeds. Steve Rodrigues suggested that this should be initiated by the social justice committee so that they can promote themselves (we could still provide resources and manpower). Fr. Dominic mentioned that the social justice committee has focused on our sister parish in Tomminique. The social justice committee does connection café once a month and helps with the Granger food pantry. Joe Fernandez suggested that we should make a donation as well. This will be discussed further when the financial secretary is present. Shannon Godwin made a motion for a biscuit sandwich breakfast on December 4th. Travis seconded the motion; motion passed.
This Saturday will be the parish grounds cleanup. Meet at church at 8:00 AM.
Marty Herrmann talked about adult faith formation. The committee will have a fund raising dinner in January 21st. They are not looking for money, but they could use help with manpower. Ken Welch agreed to cook.
Fr. Dominic reported on an upcoming parish retreat “The Joy of Forgiveness” which will be March 18th . Also a reconciliation service will be December 7th.
Fr. Dominic mentioned that he would like to hold mass in the gym to avoid the cost of having the video setup.
Travis reported that the parish auction/barn dance was quite successful. Start thinking of items for next year. Directional signs with mass times are going to be setup in Granger. Help with installation is needed. Also a new digital sign will be installed. Bingo at the Granger nursing home will be this Sunday at 2:00 PM. Show up at 1:45 at church to help.
Ken Wiley (faithful navigator) reported on 4th degree meeting will be held next Monday at Twisted Vine brewery. Next 4th degree installation will be March/April. 4th degree focus is patriotism.
Live Nativity auction item was purchased. Purchaser would like the live nativity scene to be held at church on December 18th.
Joppa Christmas party will be coming up.
Robbie and Tiffany Manning had a house fire. Current need is not known.
