Knights of Columbus Meeting May 18, 2017.
7:35 PM meeting called to order.
Officer role call – Not present were: warden (Chris Kitt), lecturer (Dec. Tom Schenk), and trustee (Dan Merry).
Joe Fernandez made a motion to waive the reading of the minutes; seconded by Travis Risvold; motion passed.
Grand Knight had us listen to a talk from the state convention by Rev. William Reynolds. In this address, Fr. Reynolds responded to a Facebook post comment from a women criticizing opposition to abortion: “Well, sure, you are there to oppose abortion, but what will you do after the child is born?” Fr. Reynolds went on to list many of the thinks that K of C members do. Fr. District deputy Jamie was back following successful back surgery. Jamie talked about the recently announced planned parenthood closings and thanked us for our Intervisions Clinic support.
Treasures report: $10,026 in checking (2,000 for K of C scholarships not withdrawn yet). $15,000 in CD.
Financial secretary report: Steve Rodriguez talked about “Into the Breach” and the role of Catholic men in defending our faith (http://intothebreach.org/) Jodi Bermel motioned to purchase 100 copies of the booklet, Shannon Godwin seconded the motion; motion passed. We would like to recruit 2 new members by the end of the fiscal year in June. We talked about possibly having an honor guard at Knights Mass to promote K of C. It was decided that the honor guard should really be reserved for special occasions.
Our Faithful Navigator Ken Wiley has fulfilled his term. He will be moving on to the Faithful Admiral position.
Faithfull Navigator Report (KenWiley): Freedom rock project at VA Hospital. The rock will be part of a planned therapy garden consisting of different surfaces and various grades. The rock is currently in Ft. Dodge. Bubba Sorenson had agreed to paint the rock. This is scheduled for November. A tent and heating source has been donated for the project. The project to drape flags over deceased patients at the VA Hospital has been picked up by the VA Hospital itself.
K of C Scholarship update: There were only two applicants, and they were both good candidates. It was decided to award them each a $1,000 scholarship.
The recent grounds cleanup went well. Thank you to all who helped out.
There was a recent officers meeting and one topic that came up was a discussion of spending. Shannon Godwin described the proper procedures for spending. Approval of spending over $500 requires 2/3 majority and notice 1 month prior to the actual spending vote. This is an official K of C procedure, and we will follow this procedure for expenditures over $500.
We will need a change of venue for the June meeting. Jodi Bermel suggested the Granger community center or perhaps the American legion.
We need a room or hall to display K of C awards and pictures. Travis Risvold Nominated Joe Henkels to look into this. Tony Slack seconded the motion, and the motion passed.
We are planning a breakfast for Granger Days on August 26th. We are also planning for another Hot Rods and Hogs event on August 4th.
Jodi Bermel suggested an event at the park in Woodward. This would include a bike ride on the High Trestle Bridge, and hot dogs& burgers in the park. It would be a family event. Merlyn, Paul, and Shannon will form a planning committee.
Mark Good, a Waukee senior has requested to speak to us about prostate cancer, and Mary Lesh, and attorney, has requested to speak to us about trusts. The consensus on these requests was no.
Tony Slack reported on Tootsie Pops fund raiser planned for Saturday from 8-12 at Fareway in Grimes and Caseys in Granger. Joe Fernandez and Merlyn Wiese are scheduled 10-12 at Caseys. Marty Herrmann and Kendall Geneser are scheduled 10-12 at Fareway. More help is needed.
Ken Welch relayed a request from his son Bother Pierre Georgio for coffee funding at the Fransiscan Friars of the Renewal Missions. Jodi Bermel made a motion to spend $500 to support this effort. Travis seconded the motion; motion passed.
We need to start thinking of worthy causes to spend some of our $15,000 endowment on.
